In control of our own choices
For cancer survival by cancer survivors

What was it like when the doctor first said those words, "You have _____ cancer." (Fill in the blank yourself; the 'BIG C' word is horrifying wherever in the body it is.) You were paralyzed with fear of course; just like every other cancer survivor.

We believe that true healing from cancer comes from within. When we nurture the needs of our bodies, minds, and spirits, we become involved in our own complete healing process. In this way, we actively participate in healing from our cancer in partnership with our doctors and healers. We must not passively rely solely on doctors to take away the symptoms of cancer.

It is our wish to dispel the darkness of cancer by bringing in the light of health. As cancer survivors, we offer you support on your journey from cancer to health with simple, natural lifestyle changes that promote healing from cancer from within and a healthy lifestyle of wellness. It is our wish to support you and those you love by offering ideas and hope for your own cancer survival.

What Cancer Cannot Do

Cancer is so limited:
It cannot cripple love
It cannot shatter affection
It cannot corrode faith
It cannot kill friendship
It cannot suppress memories
It cannot silence courage
It cannot invade the soul
It cannot conquer the spirit
It cannot steal eternal life

What We Must do to Survive Cancer

We must learn to take charge of our health:
To make informed choices by questioning everything.
To radically change our lifestyle to benefit our health.
To believe in the power within.
To trust ourselves.
To honor our acquired wisdom.
To begin a self-directed, self-administered journey for regaining full health!

How do we Start?

You have already started by seeking information! Choosing to learn and take control is Step 1.

Learn about food and nutrition. Knowledge is power.

Some old adages are even truer now than ever. Hippocrates, the Greek physician and father of medicine, said in 377 BC ”Let medicine be your food, and food your medicine.” Hippocrates understood and promoted the use of plants in restoring health.

For those of us that need and want to regain health, be assured there's tough a job ahead, a challenge to our acquired tastes and habits. Have courage – research tells us it only takes 21 days to change old habits or acquire new ones.

Another truth! It is much easier to maintain rather than regain.

Step 2

Stop damaging your body. Now, and from now on, is the time to care about what you put in your body!

"My body is the temple of my spirit and my teeth are the pearly gates. Let nothing past the teeth (pearly gates) that might sully or damage the body."

No smoking, no caffeine, no additives, no preservatives, no artificial colors and flavorings, no dairy, no sugar, no wheat, no hydrogenated oils. Read labels. If you can’t pronounce it DON’T eat it. Nothing processed! High cooking or processing temperatures ‘kill’ the enzymes necessary for your body to digest your food. DEAD food is stored, …. guess where? Where ever your personal problem area is …… most common is a ‘jelly belly’ or the hips. Or in my case – both!

"You wear what you eat."
(Quote from Discovering Wellness with permission.)

Our lifestyle choices have led each one of us to where we are today. Look in the mirror, look at the scale, look at the measuring tape. That's the truly honest assessment of exactly where we are. Yes, we wear what we eat. Ouch!

Step 3

Start feeding your body the proper nutrition to promote health and strength.

Eat LIVE RAW FOOD to live.

How very basic. The simplest of all answers. The ultimate fast food.

"Pick it – Eat it."
(Charles Holmes – President of Conscious Planet, quoted with permission)

Eat all organic fruits and vegetables if you can.
Learn what products your body needs to return to health:
a) Remove the toxins from your diet, especially to stop new damage;
b) Remove the existing toxic 'sludge' from the body system to allow it to start repairing itself;
c) Take in the nutrients to feed the body, promote healthy repairs and replace illness with wellness.

Step 4: To Defy Death

Pitting themselves against potential life threatening events and situations; people pay big bucks to experience the edge. Eco-challenges, bungy jumping, parachuting, motorcycle racing, bronc riding, car racing, flying ultra lights - there are endless opportunities to experience that death defying thrill. Perhaps someone you know and/or love could be right there on that edge. Betting with their life.

Every day - I am. We are!

Read & Learn

My generation, the ‘baby boomers' have been educated with the system sanctioned Canada Food Guide picturing the three squares a day with breads and cereals, milk and cheese, meat and fish, and last but not least - vegetables. This, despite the fact that most of the people alive on this planet, anywhere but North America , probably have never heard of this food guide. Just think of all those millions of people out there apparently living, even thriving, without the proper three squares a day as taught in all our schools.

The Canada Food Guide is in direct opposition to the science of trophology (food combining), a term which you and no doubt your doctor, have probably never heard before. Starch and Protein - possibly the worst combination of foods to mix together at a single meal, and yet it is the mainstay of modern Western diets: meat and potatoes, hamburgers and fries, bacon and eggs with toast, cheese sandwich, etc. Now that hurts! There goes my favorite sandwich – cheese, onion and tomato.

We need to learn what is good nutrition!

2. Exercise

Of course a young body in vibrant health loves to move. But we've been schooled from age 5 into sitting still, quietly, for at least 6 hours a day. For a minimum of 12 years! Add TV time, video games, post-secondary education and that desk job.

Now in maturity, we're told we should get our middle-aged, perhaps out of shape, perhaps over-weight bodies, moving. Get off the couch! There's a whole billion industry dedicated to overcoming our early training.

Of course we need exercise in order to thrive!

Grandma changed
In the dim and distant past
When life's tempo wasn't so fast,
Grandma used to rock and knit,
     Crochet, tat and baby sit.

When the kids were in a jam,
They could always call on Gram.
But today she's in the gym
     Exercising to keep slim.

She's checking the web or surfing the net,
Sending some e-mail or placing a bet.
Nothing seems to stop or block her,
Now that Grandma's off her rocker.

3. Smoking

Ask any smoker if they think smoking is a bad habit. Chances are they will tell you that they wished they could quit smoking or they've tried or it's so very expensive or they have family that wished they would.

Then ask that smoker why they still smoke. Seldom will the real answer come forth. It's an addiction. It's an addiction to a drug. It's a very insidious addiction; because it's legal, taxed and readily available. It's an addiction on three levels, the physical, emotional and psychological. Although it doesn't have the connotations of other ‘bad' addictions like other street drugs, it's still an addiction.

Ask any ex-smoker how much commitment and sheer determination it took to break that bad habit/addiciton. Ask me. It was October 18, 1996, just 10 days before I went to the cancer clinic to begin radiation. Now that was truly motivational. And believe me, it was the toughest thing I ever did.

It is now 2007 and I am thriving! Read my story, learn my lessons. Join me on a journey to wellness!

Condensed – here are the simple truths:

My body is the temple of my spirit and my teeth are the pearly gates.
Let Medicine be your food and Food your medicine.
We wear what we eat.
Knowledge is power.
